New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

Strength in Numbers worked with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene on a research project to improve services for transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people in city public health clinics. We did observations in clinics, interviews with clinic staff and focus groups with TGNC community members. The project was guided by a seven member TGNC Community Advisory Board and culminated in a report with specific recommendations to improve services. Subsequently, we developed a training curriculum involving TGNC practice patients for sexual health clinic staff to practice using correct names and pronouns and taking sexual histories.
