Stonewall Community Development Corporation

Strength in Numbers worked with Stonewall Community Development Corporation (SCDC) to do a rapid opportunity assessment to understand the options for housing relevant to LGBTQ older adults in New York City. We interviewed stakeholders in city government, experts in financing, organizations working in housing for special populations, housing social service providers, nonprofit developers and organizations or individuals involved in securing LGBTQ housing for older adults in other parts of the United States. Following these interviews, we made a report with recommendations for the SCDC board. Subsequently, we did a survey of nearly one thousand LGBTQ older adults in New York City to assess their current housing, housing preferences and eligibility for specific housing programs. The findings will be used to inform SCDC’s work, as well as the broader field of LGBTQ housing for older adults.
